10 Best Things to Do in Uganda

Uganda might look small on a map of Africa, but it packs an incredible punch. When I am out in the field helping travelers and photographers capture East Africa, Uganda always stands out because of its pure variety. You can go from standing a few feet away from a giant mountain gorilla in a misty rainforest to cruising past elephants on the River Nile, all in the same trip.

If you are trying to figure out how to spend your time here, the choices are endless. I always like to balance the famous highlights with a few quiet, hidden spots most tourists miss. To help you get started, here is my personal list of the absolute best things to do in Uganda.

1. Trekking Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi

Nothing prepares you for the sheer presence of a mountain gorilla family. While the trek demands some serious determination—hacking through untamed vine tangles, navigating steep ridges, and finding your footing on slick mud—the reward is entirely unmatched.

When you finally freeze in your tracks and lock eyes with a massive silverback, the entire world goes quiet. Watching the youngsters tumble around in the moss while the adults keep a watchful eye in the filtered jungle light isn’t just wildlife viewing; it is a raw, heart-stopping connection to nature that stays anchored in your memory forever.

2. Spotting Tree-Climbing Lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Spotting a lion on the savannah is always an incredible moment, but imagine looking up and seeing Africa’s top apex predator perched high in a tree like an oversized house cat. In the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, large prides spend their hot afternoons draped over the branches of sycamore figs. While they look surprisingly cozy up there, the real entertainment starts when they decide it is time to return to Earth. Let’s just say, their descent involves a lot of sliding and scrambling—you definitely won’t confuse them with a graceful leopard!

3. Tracking Chimpanzees in Kibale Forest

Chimpanzee

Chimpanzee trekking drops you straight into a chaotic, high-energy world. One minute you are quietly following trackers through the dense undergrowth, and the next, the canopy explodes with deafening pant-hoots as a massive family of wild apes swings directly overhead.

Spending an hour watching them bicker, play, and groom just meters away is wild and fast-paced. But it’s the quiet moments—when they freeze and lock eyes with you—that leave you spellbound by the undeniable human connection.

4. Taking a Boat Cruise in Murchison Falls

Murchison Falls

A boat safari along the Victoria Nile is pure relaxation mixed with wild action. You’ll drift past splashing pods of hippos, massive crocodiles, and herds of elephants coming down to the riverbanks for a drink. The energy shifts completely for the grand finale at the base of Murchison Falls National Park, where the entire Nile violently forces itself through a tiny gap in the rocks with booming power. It’s a spectacular moment, best enjoyed with a cold drink in hand as the sun sets over the water.

5. Walking with Rhinos at Ziwa Sanctuary

Walk alongside expert rangers at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to experience Uganda’s only wild rhinos from a remarkably close and safe perspective. Walking on foot just a short distance from these prehistoric-looking giants is a truly thrilling moment that connects you directly to an incredible conservation success story. While past political conflicts completely wiped out the country’s rhino population, your trek today directly funds a thriving breeding program with the ultimate goal of reintroducing these magnificent animals back into Uganda’s primary national parks.

6. Relaxing at Lake Bunyonyi

After the intense trekking and long drives of a Ugandan safari, Lake Bunyonyi offers the ultimate setting to relax and catch your breath. This stunning, island-dotted lake is the perfect place to slow down for a couple of days, especially to rest your legs after a challenging gorilla hike. You can simply unwind and soak in the peaceful views, or take a quiet paddle in a traditional dugout canoe to connect with the local villagers.

7. Going on a Night Game Drive in Lake Mburo

Under the cover of night, the bush takes on an entirely different character. Taking a guided night drive in Lake Mburo National Park allows you to observe a hidden world of wildlife that is rarely seen during the day. Following the tracker’s precise spotlight, you may spot unique creatures such as genets, bush babies, spotted hyenas, or perhaps even a leopard, the most secretive of the big cats.

8. Exploring Kidepo Valley National Park on Safari

Kidepo Plains

To experience Africa exactly as it was a century ago, travel north to Kidepo Valley National Park. This vast, rugged wilderness is surrounded by mountains and home to huge numbers of wildlife. The best part of this remote park is that you can drive for hours without seeing another safari vehicle. While it takes a long journey to get here, the sense of total isolation makes it completely worthwhile.

9. Hiking Mount Sabyinyo in Mgahinga

Mt Sabyinyo

For hikers and adventurers, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers the chance to climb Mt. Sabyinyo, a dramatic extinct volcano. The trail takes you up through mist-covered bamboo zones and unique high-altitude forests. When you finally reach the rugged peak at over 3,600 meters, you are standing simultaneously on the border of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

10. Searching for the Shoebill Stork on Lake Albert

Shoebill

Take a boat trip on Lake Albert from Toro National Park to seek out the rare and prehistoric shoebill stork. The calm waters of this Rift Valley lake teem with exceptional birdlife, but the ultimate highlight is finding this giant, dinosaur-like bird standing completely still in the marshes. Local conditions here are excellent for sightings, offering you a reliable opportunity to get incredibly close for a perfect photograph.
