Wildlife
Kidepo Valley National Park boasts an impressive diversity of wildlife, with around 20 recorded predator species. Notably, it is one of the few places in Uganda where you can find cheetahs and black-backed jackals, alongside lions, leopards, and spotted hyenas. The park is also home to elephants, buffalo, plains zebras, Rothschild’s giraffes, patas monkeys, and over a dozen antelope species—some of which are not found anywhere else in Uganda. Uniquely, Kidepo is the only national park in Uganda where the ostrich, the world’s largest bird, can be seen.
Scenery
Kidepo Valley National Park is characterized by two main valleys – Kidepo Valley and Narus Valley – set against a backdrop of rugged, mountainous terrain. The Narus Valley offers wide, sweeping views from many vantage points across the park. The landscape features open grasslands dotted with acacia and desert date trees, along with striking rocky outcrops. Rising above it all is Mount Morungole, the park’s highest peak at 2,750 meters (9,022 feet), located near the tri-border of Uganda, South Sudan, and Kenya.
Activities
Kidepo Valley National Park offers exceptional game drives as the main activity. The most rewarding area is the Narus River Valley, where visitors can spot large buffalo herds, as well as elephants, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, and patas monkeys. Predators such as lions, leopards, and occasionally cheetahs may also be seen. Wildlife is less concentrated in the more remote Kidepo Valley, but it provides a scenic change of landscape and is the best area to see ostriches. Walking safaris are also available from the park headquarters, offering a more immersive wilderness experience.
Weather & Climate
Kidepo Valley National Park has a semi-arid climate, with occasional droughts during the dry season from September to March. Average afternoon temperatures are around 30°C (86°F), though it can be cooler in the higher-altitude areas of the park. The wet season runs from April to August, when short afternoon showers are common, often passing quickly.
Best Time To Visit
Kidepo Valley National Park is best visited during the dry season (September to March), when sunny conditions and thinner vegetation make wildlife easier to spot as animals gather around reliable water sources. During the wet season, the landscape becomes greener, temperatures are cooler, and birdwatching improves, offering a different but rewarding experience.
