From 1 October 2026, foreign visitors who are required to have inbound travel insurance must hold a valid policy when entering Mainland Tanzania by air, sea, or land. This requirement is set out in the Insurance (Inbound Travel Insurance) Regulations, 2026 (Government Notice No. 256).
From 1 October 2026, visitors entering mainland Tanzania must have inbound travel insurance.
NIC (National Insurance Corporation of Tanzania Limited) lists residents of EAC and SADC partner states as exempt from the mainland requirement. Keep your insurance certificate available for verification.
Your first point of entry into Tanzania determines which policy to buy. If you arrive through mainland Tanzania, buy NIC inbound travel insurance. If you arrive through Zanzibar, buy ZIC inbound travel insurance.

You need only one policy for the trip. A valid NIC policy can also cover your onward visit to Zanzibar, and a valid ZIC policy can cover your onward visit to mainland Tanzania. Keep your insurance certificate with you for verification, and check that the policy remains valid throughout your stay.
If you enter Tanzania through the mainland, purchase your mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance from the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) before you travel.
If you enter Tanzania through Zanzibar, purchase your mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) before you travel.
Purchase the inbound travel insurance required for your first point of entry: NIC if you arrive through Mainland Tanzania, or ZIC if you arrive through Zanzibar. You do not need to buy a second inbound policy when travelling between the mainland and Zanzibar while your policy remains valid.
Keep a digital or printed copy of your insurance certificate available for verification.
