The Northern Circuit Route on Kilimanjaro

Overview, Difficulty, Success, Itinerary & Expert Tips

Kilimanjaro’s Most Complete Trek

The Nothern Circuit Route Overview

The Nothern Circuit Route Overview

The Northern Circuit is the longest and most complete way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It is highly praised for its great acclimatization, amazing scenery, and a very high chance of reaching the summit.

One of its biggest advantages is the excellent acclimatization it provides. Since it is a longer journey, usually 8-9 days, your body has more time to slowly adjust to the altitude, making the climb feel much more comfortable. The route also takes you around almost the entire mountain, giving you stunning 360-degree views of all the different landscapes. Plus, it is generally much less crowded, which offers a more peaceful experience.

However, because it is a longer trip, it typically costs more, and you will need good physical stamina for the extended trek.

This route is perfect for climbers who want the best possible chance to summit, prefer a quieter adventure, have the time and budget for a longer trip, and want to see all the incredible beauty Kilimanjaro has to offer.

Insider's Take

The Northern Circuit is the best and most complete way to climb Kilimanjaro. It is designed to give you the highest possible chance of reaching the summit.

The route is longer (8-9 days), which allows your body to slowly and safely get used to the altitude. This is the main reason for its high success rate. The Northern Circuit also takes you almost around the mountain, giving you breathtaking 360-degree views and showing you all of Kilimanjaro’s unique landscapes. You’ll also experience a much quieter and more peaceful climb, as far fewer people choose this path.

Because it is a longer trip, it requires more time and is more expensive than other routes. You’ll also need good physical endurance for the extended trek, and you will be camping each night.

Ultimately, this route is perfect for climbers who want the best chance to reach the summit, prefer a quiet journey, and have the time and budget for a truly exceptional adventure.

Why The Nothern Circuit for Kilimanjaro?

The Northern Circuit has the highest summit success rate on Mount Kilimanjaro, with an impressive 90-95% of climbers reaching the top.

This is because the route is longer (8-9 days), which allows your body plenty of time to slowly get used to the altitude. This excellent acclimatization significantly reduces the risk of altitude sickness, which is the main reason climbers fail.

With your body better prepared, the final climb to Uhuru Peak becomes much more manageable and achievable.

Nothern Circuit Route FAQs

Northern Circuit: The "Grand Tour Route"

The Northern Circuit is the longest and most remote route on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a unique, panoramic experience. It is an excellent choice for trekkers who desire a less-traveled path, extended acclimatization, and a full 360-degree view of the mountain.

What is the Northern Circuit Route?

The Northern Circuit route begins on Kilimanjaro’s western side, traversing the Shira Plateau before circling around the northern slopes. The ascent to the summit is followed by a descent via the Mweka route on the southern side. This circular path allows climbers to experience all four sides of the mountain.

How Long is the Trek?

  • Length: The route is approximately 88 km (53 miles) long, making it the longest route to climb Kilimanjaro.
  • Duration: The standard itinerary is eight days, but a nine-day option is also available. The longer duration is ideal for those who want an extra rest day for better acclimatization or wish to camp in the crater.

Summit Success and Difficulty

  • Summit Success Rate: The Northern Circuit boasts a high summit success rate, typically between 80% and 90%. This is largely due to its extended duration, which provides ample time for acclimatization.
  • Difficulty: The route is moderately challenging. While no technical climbing skills are required, the longer daily treks mean it is best suited for hikers with good endurance.

Cost

The cost of a Northern Circuit expedition typically starts at around $3,199 per person. The final price can vary based on factors such as the itinerary, the number of people in the group, and any additional services or customizations.

Why Choose the Northern Circuit?

  • Fewer Crowds: As the least-trafficked route, it offers a more private and serene climbing experience.
  • Optimal Acclimatization: The extended duration provides the best possible acclimatization profile, significantly increasing your chances of reaching the summit.
  • Unique Views: The full circumnavigation of the mountain gives you unparalleled views of Kilimanjaro’s diverse landscapes from all directions.

After the Ascent, the Adventure Awaits

Following your Kilimanjaro climb, you have the opportunity to extend your adventure by adding a safari or a relaxing beach vacation. This allows you to experience the diverse beauty of Tanzania in a single, comprehensive trip. We can customize an itinerary that seamlessly transitions from the high-altitude challenge of the mountain to the wildlife-rich plains of the Serengeti or the pristine beaches of Zanzibar.
