Wildlife
The yearly majestic migration involves over two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles embarking on an 800-kilometer (approximately 500-mile) circular journey through the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem’s savannahs. The bulk of this incredible trek occurs within the expansive Serengeti, significantly outstretching the size of Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve.

The Serengeti teems with a remarkable variety of wildlife, hosting the Big Five (with the black rhino being a less common sight) alongside giraffes, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, black-backed jackals, warthogs, and an extensive assortment of antelopes. Along the banks of the Grumeti and Mara Rivers, you’ll find vocal hippos and massive crocodiles that appear as if they’ve stepped out of a prehistoric era. These rivers are especially known for the crocodiles’ dramatic feeding events during the yearly wildebeest crossings.
Scenery
The vast expanse of the Serengeti offers breathtaking vistas. Known for its boundless, wild beauty, the region is distinguished by its sprawling grasslands dotted with kopjes—rocky outcrops—in the southeast. The landscape transforms along the Western Corridor, tracing the paths of the Grumeti and Mbalageti Rivers, edged by lush riverine forests stretching toward Lake Victoria. The Lobo Hills stand out with their impressive granite formations towering into the skies. Further north, the Mara River frames the dramatic river crossings, a pivotal spectacle of the wildebeest migration, capturing the essence of nature’s raw drama.
Weather & Climate
The Serengeti enjoys moderate temperatures, rarely experiencing extreme heat. Daytime temperatures hover around a comfortable 27°C (81°F), making it quite pleasant, though nights can turn cool, necessitating warm attire for those early morning safaris. The Dry season, spanning June to October, typically sees scant rainfall, ensuring that weather seldom disrupts outdoor activities. Conversely, the Wet season, extending from November to May, reaches its zenith in March and April, when rain may occasionally impede plans.
Best Time To Visit
The Serengeti welcomes visitors year-round, yet some regions shine brighter at specific times. The wildebeest calving season in the Ndutu area marks a highlight from January to February. By June and July, the migration sweeps through the Western Corridor, offering spectacular views. The Mara River crossings, a definitive spectacle, are most impressive in August and September. During these months, wildlife spotting in the Lobo area is at its prime, making it an ideal time for a visit.
Wildlife & Animals – Serengeti NP

Serengeti National Park embodies the quintessential African safari experience. Vast herds of wildlife traverse the expansive savannah, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that stretches to the horizon. Predators are an integral part of this natural tableau, adding an element of unpredictability and excitement. Lions are frequently seen without the need for extensive searching. Cheetahs, renowned for their speed, are also a common sight, offering lucky visitors the chance to witness their breathtaking sprints. While leopards are more elusive, their penchant for resting in the large trees near the Seronera River gives you a good chance of spotting these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Wildlife Highlights

The Serengeti is celebrated for its spectacular annual wildebeest migration, a monumental journey that sees approximately 8 million hooves pounding the vast plains. This mass movement involves over 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras, and 300,000 Thomson’s gazelles, all in pursuit of new pastures. This event draws predators in large numbers, making sightings of big cats in action a thrilling aspect of the migration. Spotted hyenas, golden jackals, and black-backed jackals are also a common presence, closely trailing the migrating herds.

Best Time for Wildlife Viewing

Throughout the year, the Serengeti provides exceptional opportunities for wildlife observation. The months of June and July are particularly favorable for witnessing the migration and potential crossings at the Grumeti River. In the park’s northern areas, the more renowned crossings of the Mara River are typically observed around August and September. For those interested in experiencing the wildebeest calving season, the period from January to February is considered optimal.

Birds – Serengeti NP
Serengeti National Park is a haven for bird enthusiasts, with over 500 bird species documented within its bounds. This park plays a crucial role in the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, recognized as one of Africa’s Endemic Bird Areas (EBAs), and it is home to five unique bird species that are not found anywhere else. Among these, the grey-breasted spurfowl frequently makes an appearance around Seronera, while Fischer’s lovebird and the rufous-tailed weaver—remarkable for being the sole species in its genus—tend to populate the woodlands. The Usambiro barbet and the grey-crested helmet-shrike, though present, might be more challenging to spot. Seasonal migrations bring a variety of migratory birds to the park from November to April, further enriching the biodiversity of this extraordinary habitat.

Getting There – Serengeti NP

Beginning your Serengeti adventure usually starts from Arusha, a prominent launch point for safaris in Tanzania. The most practical approach is flying into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), which is conveniently located about 50km (31mi) from Arusha. Alternatively, travelers can opt for Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam and catch a connecting flight to either Arusha Airport (ARK) or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).

Once in Arusha, there are multiple ways to reach the Serengeti. Regular flights operate from Arusha to various airstrips within the park, providing quick access. Alternatively, adventurers can embark on a picturesque drive spanning approximately 325km (200mi), taking approximately 8 hours. Though the journey may be rough at times, it offers the opportunity to witness wildlife and breathtaking landscapes, particularly as it traverses the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

For a more comprehensive experience, many travelers opt for a combination of flying and driving. This involves flying one way and driving the other, with an overnight stop at the Ngorongoro Crater. From there, it’s about a 140km (90mi) drive to the Seronera area in the heart of the Serengeti, which takes around 3 hours.
