Overview – Ziwa Rhino Ranch
Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch was established in 2005 as a sanctuary for six southern white rhinos brought to Uganda from abroad. This original group has now grown to over 40 rhinos, all roaming freely within the fenced ranch. Tracking Africa’s second-largest land mammal at Ziwa is an exciting experience, particularly since rhinos are not found elsewhere in Uganda. Visitors can also spot other wildlife within the ranch.

Wildlife
Uganda’s only rhinos at Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch are very habituated and can be easily observed at close range on guided walks. Other wildlife includes impala, bushbuck, Uganda kob, common duiker, warthog, vervet monkey, and black-and-white colobus. In 2024, Rothschild’s giraffe and Jackson’s hartebeest were introduced. The nearby Lugogo Swamp is home to the localized sitatunga antelope and the iconic shoebill, one of over 330 bird species recorded at Ziwa.
Scenery
This relatively small reserve, Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch, is dominated by acacia and mixed woodland. While it may not offer dramatic scenery, the dense bush provides a truly authentic African atmosphere. The reserve also partially protects a large papyrus swamp along the Lugogo River.
Activities
Tracking white rhinos in Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch can take up to two hours and usually results in close-up sightings. Guided nature walks and birdwatching excursions are also available. For overnight guests, an early morning walk combined with a canoe trip on Lugogo Swamp offers a good chance of seeing the iconic shoebill. Unguided activities are not allowed, but wildlife and birds can often be viewed from the terrace restaurant.
Weather & Climate
Ziwa’s weather and climate is similar to the rest of Uganda.
Best Time To Visit
Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch is open year-round, and rhino tracking is highly successful in all seasons, with sightings almost guaranteed. In general, the best time to visit Uganda is during the drier months from June to August and December to February, when travel conditions are easier.
