Overview – Laikipia Plateau
The Laikipia Plateau offers a distinctive Kenyan safari experience. Situated at an altitude of 6,500 feet, Laikipia boasts breathtaking views of Mount Kenya, the lush northern plateau, the remote Northern Frontier District, and beyond.

Unlike national parks, Laikipia features numerous community-run conservancies. It serves as a refuge for some of East Africa’s most endangered species, including black rhinos, Grévy’s zebras, and wild dogs. In addition to the Big Five (lion, Cape buffalo, elephant, leopard, and both black and white rhinos), Laikipia boasts a remarkable diversity of wildlife, including oryx, serval, cheetah, baboons, eland, Grant’s gazelle, Jackson’s hartebeest, vervet monkeys, hippos, impala, plains zebra, bat-eared fox, silver-backed jackal, and the fascinating hyena.
 
Laikipia is also home to several indigenous communities, including the Laikipia Maasai and Samburu.

Kenya’s main international gateway is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), located approximately 15 kilometers southeast of Nairobi. The drive to Laikipia Plateau takes roughly 4 to 8 hours from Nairobi and 3 to 7 hours from Lake Nakuru National Park, depending on your destination within Laikipia. You can also combine a visit to Laikipia with Meru National Park, Samburu National Reserve, or Buffalo Springs National Reserve.
