Kalinzu Forest Reserve is one of East Africa’s most rewarding yet lesser-known chimpanzee trekking destinations. It is easily accessible from lodges and camps around nearby Queen Elizabeth National Park. The forest is home to over 300 chimpanzees, along with a variety of other primates and excellent birdwatching opportunities.

Wildlife
Kalinzu Forest, together with the adjoining Maramagambo Forest in Queen Elizabeth National Park, forms one of East Africa’s key habitats for chimpanzees. Each forest supports over 300 individuals, with no barriers to their natural movement between the two areas. The forest is also rich in other primates, including olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, blue monkeys, and black-and-white colobus. Birdlife is equally impressive, with notable species such as the black-and-white-casqued hornbill, black-billed turaco, white-tailed ant thrush, and red-tailed bristlebill.
Scenery
Kalinzu Forest is beautifully set along the Kichwamba Escarpment overlooking Queen Elizabeth National Park. It is one of Uganda’s most intact and least fragmented forests, offering a cool, lush environment that makes for an enjoyable walking experience. The surrounding landscape reflects its volcanic origins, with numerous crater lakes scattered across the area.
Activities
Chimpanzee trekking is the main highlight in Kalinzu Forest. Two chimp communities have been habituated—one for research and another, with around 50 individuals, for tourism. While the sighting success rate is approximately 90%, slightly lower than in Kibale National Park, fewer visitors allow for a more personal and intimate experience. In addition to chimp trekking, guided nature walks are available, focusing on monkeys, birds, butterflies, and plant life. A canopy walkway—set to become Uganda’s first—is planned to open in 2026, further enhancing the visitor experience.

Kalinzu Forest’s visitor center is located along the Mbarara–Kasese road, approximately 350 km (215 mi) from Kampala, with a driving time of about 7 hours*. The reserve is easily accessible for a half-day excursion from Ishaka (around 22 km / 13 mi south) or from most lodges and camps in and around Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Whether you opt for a guided tour with an experienced professional or decide to navigate the trails on a self-drive journey, safety is paramount to ensure an enjoyable and incident-free adventure. Here are some essential safety guidelines and tips to help you navigate your safari safely:

  • Adherence to Professional Guidance: Always prioritize the instructions and guidance provided by your safari guide. Their expertise and experience are invaluable in navigating the wilderness safely.
  • Be Quiet Around Animals: Animals can get scared or upset if it's too noisy. Try to be as quiet as possible when you're near them.
  • Vehicle Conduct: During game drives, remain inside the vehicle unless you're in a location where exiting is expressly permitted. Refrain from standing up, leaning out of windows, or sitting on the vehicle's roof to avoid attracting undue attention from wildlife.
  • Cautious Proximity: On a self-drive safari, maintain a safe distance from animals. Should they exhibit signs of disturbance, increase your distance immediately. Specifically, avoid driving too closely to elephants, particularly around females with their offspring.
  • Walking Safaris: If participating in a walking safari, stay in close formation near your guide, ideally in a single file, to minimize disruption to the environment and maintain group safety.
