Day 2: Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Located just three to four hours from Nairobi, Ol’ Pejeta Conservancy is a sanctuary known as a paradise for rhino enthusiasts. Home to 140 black rhinos, it is the largest refuge for these massive creatures in East and Central Africa.

Since being declared critically endangered in 1993, the global population of black rhinos has slightly recovered from just 2,300 individuals to over 5,000 today. At Ol’ Pejeta, the population has impressively grown from 20 in 1995 to 140 now. This conservancy is also the last refuge for the world’s remaining two northern white rhinos and houses 39 southern white rhinos.

Ol’ Pejeta doesn't stop there; it also operates a sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees. Within the conservancy, visitors can also see the Big Five and a wide variety of other wildlife, making it a comprehensive wildlife observation destination.

Day 3: Solio Game Reserve

Today, you'll explore Solio Game Reserve, a privately owned sanctuary committed to the conservation of rhinos. Nestled between the towering slopes of Mount Kenya and the peaks of the Aberdare Mountains, just north of Nairobi, this reserve provides a safe haven for 200 rhinos.

Originally a working cattle ranch, Solio was transformed into a wildlife sanctuary in 1973, reintroducing rhinos and other wildlife to the region. Today, it spans 49,000 acres, with 19,000 acres dedicated to protecting both black and white rhinos. These rhinos coexist peacefully with a variety of other wildlife, including buffalos, zebras, giraffes, elands, oryxes, impalas, waterbucks, Thompson’s gazelles, and warthogs. It's quite a sight to see as many as 40 rhinos congregating in one place!

Day 4: Lake Nakuru National Park

Imagine yourself driving through the hills of the Great Rift Valley, rounding a corner, and suddenly catching sight of a shimmering lake nestled among the hills. Welcome to Lake Nakuru! Just a three-hour drive from Solio Ranch, this 45 square kilometer lake sits at the heart of Lake Nakuru National Park, which, though covering only 88 square kilometers, is home to four of the Big Five.

Lake Nakuru National Park is renowned as one of the soda lakes in the Great Rift Valley. It was famously populated by millions of flamingos, but a decade ago, rising water levels forced these birds to relocate. Thankfully, they have gradually returned.

Moreover, Lake Nakuru is celebrated for its diverse fauna, including populations of black and white rhinos (introduced in the 1990s), giraffes, buffaloes, lions, leopards, baboons, and over 400 different bird species. Spotting a white rhino along the lake's edge is particularly notable, offering a truly unique spectacle.

Day 5: Lake Naivasha & Cresent

Situated in the Kenyan Rift Valley at an elevation of 1,884 meters above sea level, Lake Naivasha is the highest lake within the Great Rift Valley. Today, you will embark on a four to five-hour drive from the Masai Mara National Reserve to this expansive 139-square-kilometer freshwater lake.

From 1937 to 1950, Lake Naivasha served as a stopover for Imperial Airways flights traveling from Durban to Dublin, a journey that spanned several days. Today, its proximity to the capital makes it a favored day trip destination for Nairobi residents.

Encircled by swamps, forests, and rock formations, Lake Naivasha offers the ideal setting for a remarkable boat safari among hippos and flamingos. Along its shores, you might spot zebras, wildebeests, and giraffes. Furthermore, you can walk among these animals during a guided walking safari on Crescent Island—the "hidden gem of Naivasha" situated in the middle of the lake. This enchanting location, used as a primary filming site for the 1985 romantic drama "Out of Africa," adds a touch of cinematic history to its natural beauty.

Day 6: Afternoon Safari in Masai Mara

Today, you embark on a scenic five-hour journey from Lake Naivasha through Kenya's Rift Valley to the Masai Mara National Reserve. Prepare yourself for a breathtaking experience as you arrive at the stunning savannah plains of the Masai Mara.

After enjoying lunch, you'll witness the abundant wildlife that roams these plains. The Masai Mara, bordering Tanzania's Serengeti National Park, is part of the stage for Africa’s most famous spectacle: the annual great migration. This event sees over 2.5 million animals moving across the Serengeti and Masai Mara, following the seasonal rains in pursuit of lush pastures.

The reserve's name, Masai Mara, honors the Maasai people, who have inhabited this area since they migrated from the Nile Basin centuries ago. "Mara" means "spotted" in the Maa language, describing a landscape dotted with numerous short bushy trees across the vast savannah.

The Masai Mara is celebrated for its rich diversity of wildlife, and today you have an entire day to explore and see as much as you can! The National Reserve hosts over 95 animal species and more than 400 species of birds. From mid-September to mid-October, you can witness the incredible phenomenon of the great migration. During this period, vast herds of wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, antelopes, and impalas are often seen making their daring crossing of the Mara River.

During other times of the year, the Masai Mara is a prime viewing spot for the famous Big Five, as well as cheetahs, servals, hyenas, bat-eared foxes, black-backed or side-striped jackals, hippos, crocodiles, baboons, warthogs, topis, elands, waterbucks, oribis, reedbucks, and many more.
