Day 1: Arrival Mombasa

"Jambo!" As you exit Moi International Airport, your personal Bush 2 City Adventure guide welcomes you with a warm smile. "Karibu Kenya—welcome to Kenya!"

Your guide will escort you directly from the airport to your hotel in Bamburi, a picturesque beach located north of Mombasa's city center. The journey offers your first glimpse of Mombasa's lively atmosphere. You'll observe the historic architecture, navigate through traffic filled with motor taxis and colorful matatus (local buses), and soak in the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Feel free to ask your guide any questions about Kenyan life and culture. Not only is he knowledgeable about the local way of life, but he is also eager to share insights about the magnificent national parks you'll soon explore. Whatever your curiosities, he is there to ensure all your inquiries are thoroughly addressed!

Day 2: Tsavo East National Park

Tsavo East National Park, located a five to six-hour drive from Mombasa, is vast and awe-inspiring, spanning 13,000 square kilometers. It is renowned primarily for its populations of lions and elephants. As you traverse the expansive savannah of the Yatta Plateau, you'll witness large herds of elephants roaming the red, dusty plains. Along the way, you'll encounter a spectacular array of other wildlife. All members of the Big Five reside here, along with zebras, giraffes, African wild dogs, cheetahs, antelopes, impalas, and more.

Tsavo East offers several prime locations for wildlife observation. Madunda Rock, a 1.6-kilometer rock formation, provides excellent views of animals gathering to drink below. Lugard Falls, which is a series of rapids rather than a traditional waterfall, is teeming with hippos and crocodiles. Finally, the Aruba Dam, situated on the Voi River, forms a water basin that serves as a popular watering hole for numerous animals. In essence, Tsavo East National Park offers a comprehensive safari experience.

Day 3: Full Day Safari Tsavo East National Park

Today, you have a full day to immerse yourself in the diverse beauty of Tsavo East National Park and hopefully spot all of the Big Five.

Historically, this region was only inhabited by wildlife and small local tribes. In the 1890s, the British initiated efforts to colonize the interior of Kenya, constructing a railway through Tsavo to link Mombasa with Nairobi. The land was vast and unsuitable for cultivation, leading the government to designate it as a national park in 1948. This decision aimed to provide a sanctuary for elephants and rhinos, protecting them from poaching.

The construction of the railway was marked by hardship and peril. Many workers lost their lives during the project, with a notorious pair of lions preying on the crew, resulting in the deaths of one hundred thirty-five workers before the lions were eventually stopped. This dramatic history contributes to Tsavo East's reputation for its "man-eating" lions, epitomized by the Man-Eaters Lodge. However, rest assured that although there are over a hundred lions in the park, they have not preyed on humans for many years!

Day 4: Diani Beach

Diani Beach, located 20 kilometers south of Mombasa, is your next destination after departing Tsavo East National Park. It takes about seven hours to reach this 15-kilometer-long stretch of paradise. Lined with coconut trees, featuring white powdery sand, stunning sunsets, luxurious resorts, top-notch restaurants, water sports centers, and even local wildlife, Diani Beach truly has it all.

The aquatic life in Diani is equally impressive, perfect for those keen to explore the Indian Ocean. From spotting humpback whales in September to whale sharks from January to March, and dolphins year-round, the underwater safari continues with seahorses, nudibranchs, and ghostpipe fish.

Spend your days engaging in activities like scuba diving, snorkeling, kite surfing, windsurfing, taking boat rides, or jet skiing. Alternatively, you can choose to simply relax on the beach. If you're up for more exploration, consider a day trip to Mombasa. Wander through the old town and soak in the vibrant city life with its rich Arabic influences.
