Day 2: Ol Pejeta Concervancy

After a three to four-hour drive from Nairobi, you'll arrive at what many consider a paradise for rhino enthusiasts. The Ol' Pejeta Conservancy is the largest refuge for black rhinos in East and Central Africa, boasting a population of 140 of these imposing creatures.

Since being classified as critically endangered in 1993, the global population of black rhinos has seen a significant recovery from just an estimated 2,300 to over 5,000 today. At Ol' Pejeta, the black rhino population has steadily increased from 20 in 1995 to 140 currently. The conservancy is also notable for sheltering the world's last two northern white rhinos and 39 southern white rhinos.

Additionally, Ol' Pejeta is home to a sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees. Visitors to the park can also expect to see the Big Five and a diverse array of other wildlife.

Samburu National Reserve
Day 3: Afternoon Safari in Samburu National Reserve

With its stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife, Samburu National Reserve offers a game-viewing experience akin to what you might see on National Geographic. Located seven hours from Nairobi, its semi-arid desert and savannah terrain make the animals particularly easy to spot.

Spanning 165 square kilometers, the park is home to over a hundred elephants that roam in large families, making it a truly magnificent destination. For optimal wildlife viewing, follow the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, the primary water source for many animals during the dry seasons. The reserve is inhabited by four of the Big Five—lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalos—as well as the Samburu Special Five, which includes Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, and the Somali ostrich.

Day 4
Samburu National Reserve
Day 4: Full Day Safari in Samburu National Reserve

During your full day in Samburu, you'll have the opportunity to thoroughly search for the Big Five and spend time observing the elephants. The day can get hot, making early morning and late afternoon the best times for game viewing. Between these periods, you can relax at your hotel or visit the enchanting Samburu people.

The Samburu are a traditionally nomadic tribe related to the Maasai. They reside in secluded bomas, small villages encircled by wooden fences. Their homes feature rounded roofs constructed from cow dung, reflecting their pastoral lifestyle centered around herding cows, sheep, or goats. Samburu women are particularly noted for their intricate and colorful necklaces and headwear, crafted from small beads.

Taking a break from safari activities, you can visit one of their bomas to immerse yourself in the traditional lifestyle of the Samburu. This experience allows you to explore their homes, understand their way of life, learn how they craft their necklaces, and discover the secret messages embedded within them.

Day 5
Aberdare National Park
Day 5: Aberdare National Park

With its mountains, rainforests, moorlands, and opportunities for exceptional hikes, Aberdare offers a distinct experience from the more typical savannah-dominated parks. This protected area lies within the Aberdare Mountain Range, east of the Rift Valley, and is a five-hour drive from Samburu National Reserve. Alongside traditional game drives, you can enjoy beautiful hikes to explore the park’s numerous waterfalls.

Established as a national park in 1950, Aberdare spans 766 square kilometers and features both high mountain peaks (reaching up to 4000 meters) and deep valleys. The park is lush with streams, towering waterfalls as high as 300 meters, rainforests, and bamboo forests that host a diverse array of wildlife. Among the residents are elephants, lions, leopards, East African wild dogs, bushbucks, giraffes, baboons, buffalos, eastern black rhinos, and various endangered bird species. Additionally, fortunate visitors might even catch a glimpse of the extremely elusive black leopard.

Day 6: Nairobi Airport

Interested in extending your adventure? You can add more national parks to your itinerary or conclude your trip with a relaxing beach holiday.

Kenya boasts stunning tropical beaches perfect for unwinding after your safari. At Africa Safari Trips, we're particularly fond of the gorgeous beaches in southern Kenya, accessible by plane or train. Diani Beach, located 20 kilometers south of Mombasa, and the vibrant Bamburi Beach to the north offer crystal blue waters, pristine white sands, endless pools, and colorful cocktails. Plus, the historic city of Mombasa is just a short distance away, offering a cultural experience to complement your beach relaxation.
