Day 2: Lake Nakuru National Park

Imagine driving over the hills of the Great Rift Valley, rounding a bend, and catching sight of a shimmering lake nestled among the hills—welcome to Lake Nakuru! Just four hours from Nairobi, this 45 square kilometer lake sits at the heart of the 88 square kilometer Lake Nakuru National Park. Although relatively small, the park is a sanctuary for four of the Big Five.

Lake Nakuru National Park is among the soda lakes of the Great Rift Valley. A decade ago, rising water levels drove away its millions of flamingos, but thankfully, they have gradually returned.

The park is also renowned for its populations of black and white rhinos (introduced in the 1990s), giraffes, buffalos, lions, leopards, baboons, and over 400 different bird species. Spotting a white rhino on the lake's edge is particularly striking—a truly unique spectacle!

Day 3: Afternoon Safari in Masai Mara National Reserve

Today, embark on a scenic six-hour drive from Lake Nakuru through Kenya’s Rift Valley to the Masai Mara National Reserve. Prepare for a breathtaking experience as you arrive at the stunning savannah plains of the Masai Mara!

After lunch, you'll get your first taste of these expansive plains, teeming with wildlife. The Masai Mara, adjacent to Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, forms part of the stage for Africa’s most celebrated natural spectacle: the annual great migration. Over 2.5 million animals traverse the plains of the Serengeti and Masai Mara, following seasonal rains in pursuit of lush grazing grounds.

The reserve is named in honor of the Masai people. The Masai (also spelled Maasai), who have inhabited this region since migrating from the Nile Basin centuries ago, give the Mara its name, which means "spotted" in the Maa language—a reference to the landscape dotted with numerous short bushy trees spread across the vast savannah.

The Masai Mara is celebrated for its rich wildlife, and today you'll have a full day to explore its diversity! The National Reserve hosts over 95 species of animals and more than 400 bird species. From mid-September to mid-October, the great migration reaches this area, bringing vast herds of wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, antelopes, and impalas attempting to cross the Mara River.

During other months, the Masai Mara offers sightings of the famous Big Five, along with cheetahs, servals, hyenas, bat-eared foxes, black-backed or side-striped jackals, hippos, crocodiles, baboons, warthogs, topis, elands, waterbucks, oribis, reedbucks, and many more. It’s a fantastic way to wrap up your safari adventure!

Want to extend your adventure? You can add more national parks to your itinerary or cap off your holiday with a relaxing beach stay.

Kenya's coast offers spectacular tropical beaches perfect for unwinding after your safari. At Africa Safari Trips, we're particularly fond of the beautiful stretches of beach in southern Kenya, accessible by plane or train. You can explore the exquisite Diani Beach, located 20 kilometers south of Mombasa, or the vibrant Bamburi Beach to the north. Picture crystal blue waters, pristine white sands, endless pools, and colorful cocktails.
