Day 2: Ol pejeta Concervancy

Just a three to four-hour drive from Nairobi takes you to what many consider a paradise for rhino enthusiasts. The Ol' Pejeta Conservancy, home to 140 black rhinos, is the largest sanctuary for these majestic creatures in East and Central Africa.

Black rhinos have been classified as critically endangered since 1993, with their numbers dwindling to just 2,300 worldwide at that time. Fortunately, their population has rebounded to over 5,000 today. In Ol' Pejeta, the black rhino population has impressively grown from 20 in 1995 to 140 currently. Additionally, the conservancy is the last refuge for the world's remaining two northern white rhinos and also houses 39 southern white rhinos.

Ol' Pejeta doesn't stop there; it also operates a sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees. Within the park, you can observe the Big Five and many other wildlife species, making it a truly remarkable wildlife haven.

Day 3: Afternoon Safari in Samburu

Samburu National Reserve offers stunning landscapes and an abundance of wildlife that rivals scenes typically found on National Geographic. Located a five-hour drive from Ol’ Pejeta, this reserve features a semi-dry desert and savannah landscape, making the wildlife especially easy to spot.

Spanning 165 square kilometers and home to over nine hundred elephants, Samburu is a phenomenal place to explore. Large families of elephants can be seen roaming the park. The Ewaso Nyiro River, the reserve's lifeline, is the best spot for game viewing, serving as the primary water source for many animals during the dry seasons. Here, you can see four of the Big Five—lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalo—as well as less common species like wild dogs, Grevy's zebras, gerenuks, and Beisa oryxes. The river is also a habitat for crocodiles and hippos, who either cool off in its waters or lie in wait for prey along its banks.

Samburu National Reserve
Day 4: Samburu National Reserve

During your full day in Samburu, you'll have ample opportunity to search for the Big Five and observe the reserve's famous elephants. Since it can get quite hot during the day, game viewing is most rewarding in the cooler morning and afternoon hours. Between these times, you can relax at your hotel or visit the indigenous Samburu people.

The Samburu are a traditionally nomadic tribe, closely related to the Maasai. They live in secluded bomas, which are small villages encircled by wooden fences. Their huts feature rounded roofs constructed from cow dung, reflecting their pastoral lifestyle predominantly centered around herding cows, sheep, and goats. Samburu women are known for their intricate and colorful necklaces and headgear, which they meticulously craft from small beads.

Taking a break from safari activities, you can visit one of their bomas. This visit allows you to immerse yourself in the Samburu's traditional lifestyle, see their unique homes, learn about their customs, understand how they craft their ornate necklaces, and discover the hidden meanings within these beautiful pieces.

Day 5: Solio Ranch

Today, you'll explore Solio Game Reserve, a privately owned sanctuary that focuses on rhino conservation. Nestled in the valley between the lofty slopes of Mount Kenya and the peaks of the Aberdare Mountains just north of Nairobi, Solio provides a haven for 200 rhinos.

Originally a working cattle ranch, Solio was partly transformed into a wildlife sanctuary in 1973 to reintroduce rhinos and other wildlife to the area. Now, it spans 49,000 acres, with 19,000 acres dedicated to protecting both black and white rhinos. The sanctuary also supports a diverse array of other wildlife, including buffalos, zebras, giraffes, elands, oryxes, impalas, waterbucks, Thompson’s gazelles, and warthogs. It's not unusual here to see groups of up to 40 rhinos at a time, making Solio Game Reserve a remarkable place for wildlife viewing.

Day 6
Lake Naivasha (Naivasha)
Day 6: Lake Naivasha (Naivasha)

Lake Naivasha, set in the Kenyan Rift Valley at 1,884 meters above sea level, is the highest lake in the Great Rift Valley. Today, you'll travel four to five hours from the Masai Mara National Reserve to this expansive 139-square-kilometer freshwater lake.

From 1937 to 1950, Lake Naivasha served as a landing site for Imperial Airways planes on their route from Durban to Dublin, a journey that spanned several days. Today, the lake is a favored day trip destination for Nairobi residents, thanks to its proximity to the capital.

Surrounded by swamps, forests, and rock formations, Lake Naivasha offers the ideal setting for a spectacular boat safari among groups of hippos and flamingos. Along the shores, you might spot zebras, wildebeests, and giraffes. The adventure continues with a guided walking safari on Crescent Island—often referred to as the 'hidden gem of Naivasha'—located in the middle of the lake. This enchanting location, which was a primary filming site for the 1985 romantic drama "Out of Africa," provides a unique opportunity to walk amongst the wildlife in a truly atmospheric setting.

Day 7
Day 7: Afternoon Safari in Masai Mara
Day 7: Masai Mara National Reserve

Today, embark on a scenic four-hour drive from Lake Naivasha through Kenya's Rift Valley to the Masai Mara National Reserve. Prepare to be awestruck by the breathtaking savannah plains of the Masai Mara upon your arrival!

After enjoying lunch, you'll have your first encounter with these expansive plains and their rich wildlife. The Masai Mara, bordering Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, forms part of the setting for Africa’s most famous natural spectacle: the annual great migration. This event sees over 2.5 million animals, including wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles, traversing the plains of the Serengeti and Masai Mara in pursuit of fresh, green pastures.

The reserve's name, Masai Mara, honors the Maasai people, who have inhabited this region since they migrated from the Nile Basin centuries ago. "Mara" means "spotted" in the Maa language, describing a landscape dotted with numerous short, bushy trees across the vast savannah.

Day 8: Full Day in Masai Mara

Today in the Masai Mara, you have a full day to explore its rich array of wildlife. The National Reserve boasts over 95 species of animals and more than 400 bird species. From mid-September to mid-October, witness the dramatic scenes of the great migration, as vast herds of wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, antelopes, and impalas attempt to ford the Mara River.

Outside of migration season, the Masai Mara remains a wildlife haven where you can observe the famed Big Five, along with cheetahs, servals, hyenas, bat-eared foxes, black-backed or side-striped jackals, hippos, crocodiles, baboons, warthogs, topis, elands, waterbucks, oribis, reedbucks, and many more.
