Day 2: Taita Hills & Lumo Copnservancy

Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary and Lumo Conservancy are privately owned parks situated close to each other, approximately a three to four-hour drive from Mombasa.

Nestled within the stunning Eastern Arc Mountain Range, Taita Hills is one of Africa's oldest mountain ranges, spanning 110 square kilometers. This sanctuary is home to a variety of endemic species, making it a must-visit location. It hosts some of Kenya's most endangered birds, including the Taita Apalis and Taita Thrush. Other unique species like the Taita Hills Purple-glossed Snake, Taita Blade-horned Chameleon, Taita Falcon, Taita White-eye, and the Southern Banded Snake-eagle also thrive here. The sanctuary is rich with typical African wildlife as well, such as African bush elephants, lions, cheetahs, buffaloes, leopards, hyenas, giraffes, and zebras.

Lumo Conservancy also offers excellent opportunities for game drives. It’s feasible to explore both parks in a single day. Additionally, Lumo offers the thrilling option of a night game drive for an extra fee.

Day 3: Tsavo West National Park

Tsavo West National Park boasts a richly diverse landscape with green hills, savannahs, water bodies, and lava rocks from nearby volcanoes. Just a two-hour drive from Taita Hills, this expansive park covers 9,065 square kilometers and is home to all of the Big Five—lions, leopards, rhinoceroses, elephants, and buffalos—that share the land with giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and various birds.

Tsavo West is renowned for the Shetani Lava Flows, where fifty square kilometers of volcanic black rock stretch across the terrain. Additionally, the Mzima Springs are a highlight, consisting of four natural springs that release fifty million gallons of crystal-clear water daily from beneath the arid lava rock. The clarity of these waters makes hippos and crocodiles particularly easy to spot.

Established in 1948, Tsavo West, along with its sibling Tsavo East, is among Kenya’s oldest national parks. The parks are divided by a highway and railway line that links Mombasa to Nairobi, serving as a vital connection between the coast and the capital.

Day 4: Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is situated on the border between Kenya and Tanzania, just a three-hour drive from Tsavo West. Spanning nearly 400 square kilometers, this park offers stunning views of the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro. It is renowned for its large herds of free-roaming elephants, providing an ideal backdrop for iconic photographs of these majestic creatures with Africa’s highest standalone mountain in the background.

The park is closely associated with the Maasai people, who are integral to its history and culture. They named the park after Kioko Lake, a body of water in the park's center that often dries up during the dry season, leaving behind ashy soil known as 'Amboseli' to the Maasai. This is the origin of the park's name. A visit to Amboseli also offers a chance to explore Maasai culture further by visiting one of their villages nearby.

Tsavo East National Park
Day 5: Afternoon Safari in Tsavo East

Tsavo East National Park, a four-hour drive from Taita Hills, is vast and sprawling, covering an area of 13,000 square kilometers. It is renowned for its abundant lion and elephant populations. As you traverse the expansive savannah of the Yatta Plateau, you'll encounter large herds of elephants roaming the red dusty plains, along with a remarkable variety of other wildlife. The park is home to all members of the Big Five, as well as zebras, African wild dogs, cheetahs, antelopes, impalas, and more.

Several spots within Tsavo East are particularly excellent for wildlife viewing. Madunda Rock, a 1.6-kilometer-long rock formation, offers a prime vantage point for observing animals as they gather to drink below. Lugard Falls, characterized by rapid waters rather than a traditional waterfall, is populated with hippos and crocodiles. The Aruba Dam, on the Voi River, forms a water basin that attracts numerous animals looking to hydrate. Tsavo East National Park truly offers a comprehensive safari experience.

Day 6
Tsavo East National Park
Day 6: Full Day Safari in Tsavo East

Today, you have the entire day to immerse yourself in the diverse beauty of Tsavo East National Park and hopefully catch sight of all of the Big Five.

Historically, this region was solely inhabited by wildlife and small local tribes. In the 1890s, the British initiated efforts to colonize the interior of Kenya, constructing a railway through Tsavo to link Mombasa and Nairobi. The land, largely unsuitable for farming, led to the decision in 1948 to designate it as a national park, providing a sanctuary for elephants and rhinos and protecting them from poaching.

The construction of the railway was marked by significant challenges. Many workers died during the project, with some fatalities caused by lion attacks. Two particularly notorious lions terrorized the construction crew for weeks, resulting in the deaths of one hundred and thirty-five workers before they were ultimately subdued. This historical incident contributes to Tsavo East’s reputation for its man-eating lions, commemorated today by the Man Eaters Lodge. However, it's important to note that while the park is home to over a hundred lions, they have not preyed on humans for many years.
