  • Day 8 | Gorilla tracking Bwindi NP

Arise early today and prepare for the highlight of your safari, an unforgettable encounter with the Gentle Giants!

Following breakfast, transfer to the national park offices where you will be allocated a gorilla family in groups of 8 as well as a gorilla tracking guide. After a pre-tracking briefing by your guide touching on the gorillas generally, your assigned gorilla family as well as appropriate safety precautions, you drive to the trailhead for the start of a thrilling adventure. Expect to walk between 2 and 8 hours in steep and sometimes muddy conditions with rain overhead, which can be tough and require a degree of (average) fitness. However, the thrill of coming face to face with a giant Mountain Gorilla silverback completely makes up for the effort!

Please remember to bring your passport for registration, appropriate, waterproof hiking boots, and a light raincoat. To protect from stinging nettles, we recommend long pants and long-sleeved tops. A pair of old gardening gloves can help grab onto the vegetation while most hotels/lodges provide a walking stick that comes in very handy, especially when hiking downhill. A small waterproof backpack is an excellent idea to carry a light snack, bottled water as well as protection for your camera.

Upon sighting the gorillas, you spend the allowed one hour with them as they go about their daily life; feeding, moving, playing, raising their young, and sometimes wrestling with the juveniles – it is a totally unique and unforgettable experience!

Main Destination: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Gorillas)

     Accommodation: Mutanda Lake Resort

                                  > Mid-range lodge located outside Bwindi NP

  • Day 9 | Kisoro –Mt. Mgahinga NP- Volcanoes NP Golden Monkey Trekking

After breakfast, drive to Mgahinga National Park. Accompany the game rangers and porters in the morning to track golden monkeys.

A unique experience that will enhance your primate safari in Uganda! Golden Monkey might not be the most well-known primate, but is certainly an enjoyable, little creature that is worth visiting. It is a small curious monkey, golden in color, and loves to scamper around the trees. There are an estimated 3000-4000 individuals lining the bamboo forests of Virunga Volcanoes, though researchers claim that they are still very much endangered as they face the same difficulties as their cousins the mountain Gorillas.

Later, drive through the beautiful rolling hills with stops at places of interest, cross the Uganda and Rwanda border, and drive to Ruhengeri the base for Gorilla trekking at the Parc National des Volcans. Ruhengeri town itself, located only 25km from the Uganda border, is relatively a small city. The constant flow of humanity is quite remarkable. The Town has great views of the surrounding volcanoes. People are very friendly here and although a former Belgian colony (and thus French-speaking), many people speak English here.

Main Destination: Volcanoes National Park (Gorillas)

     Accommodation: Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge

                                  > Mid-range lodge located just outside Volcanoes NP

Meals & Drinks: > All meals included (Drinks not included).

  • Day 10 | Trek Diana Fossey Grave – Nyugwe Forest for an evening Canopy walk

    Early breakfast at your lodge;

The Dian Fossey trek involves a 30 minutes drive from the park headquarters to the trailhead to access the Karisoke research camp where visitors walk for 10 minutes to the park boundary.

The walk from the park boundary to the research center where Dian’s grave is taken about an hour to 1 hour and a half hours and affords good views of forest hogs, forest elephants, a variety of primates, and bird species.

This hike is an incredible experience physically, emotionally, and intellectually. It is so inspiring to learn about someone who was so dedicated and left a legacy that exists even today. The hike involves moving through the forests and hiking up the slopes and therefore requires some relative degree of fitness and patience.

At the site, you will find the house from where Dian Fossey was mysteriously murdered in 1985 but the more peaceful is the place where she was buried just next to her favorite gorilla friend, Digit, and about 20 other mountain gorillas either killed by poachers or suffered death for other reasons.

After the trek, join your driver-guide for a transfer back to your lodge to check out and transfer to Nyungwe National Park.

In the afternoon, you will go for the canopy walk which offers a splendid view over the lush forest with its magnificent biodiversity. Hardwood trees dominate the upper canopy while the lower part is beautified with a large selection of orchids, flora, and fauna that flourish better in the higher altitudes

Main Destination: Volcanoes National Park (Gorillas)

     Accommodation: Gisakura Guest House

                                  > Budget guest house located inside Nyungwe NP

  • Day 11 | Black and white Columbus Monkey Tracking – Lake Kivu

Walking through the mountain rainforest and being surrounded on all levels by these active and cheeky monkeys is an experience not to be missed.

     Accommodation: Paradise Malahide

                                  > Mid-range hotel located in or near Lake Kivu

Meals & Drinks: > All meals included (Drinks not included).

  • Day 13 | Morning Transfer to Kigali for a City Drive

Today you will enjoy the scenic drive back to Kigali, then take up a city tour of Kigali including a visit to the Genocide Memorial site, a grim reminder of a senseless massacre of innocent’s lives in 1994. Learn about Rwanda’s history from pre-colonial times to the 1994 genocide; learn about other genocides in the world and how this country has dealt with that past.
