Measured by sheer sandy drama, the Namib is the monarch of earthly deserts. Its stupendous dunes-rising from the desert-like tsunamis poised to break- is the highest on earth; they could look the Empire State Building straight in the eye. This short, exhilarating Namibian jaunt is easily arranged as an extension for any of our Southern African safaris or, for that matter, any of our African journeys.
Our tour of Namibia begins at Hosea International Airport, from where we’ll head to the charming town of Windhoek. After lunch, we’ll stop by Olive Exclusive, a boutique hotel that pays homage to Namibia’s various regions in each of its unique suites.
The salt pans and sand mountains of Sossuvlei are the epitomai of the Namib, and that’s where we’ll be spending our time on days two and three of the tour. Our elegant stone-and-glass villas at the Sossusvlei Desert Lodge will see us exploring the night sky through the lodge’s private high-powered telescope, guided by the resident astronomer, as we roam the cosmos of Africa’s only International Dark Sky Reserve.
During the days, we’ll explore the dunes and visit the waterholes that sustain the desert-adapted animal life here, including the likes of oryx, springbok, ostriches, foxes, and leopards. We’ll marvel at the deep gorge of Sesriem Canyon, and for those interested, we can arrange optional hot-air balloon rides and guided desert walks.
After a sunrise breakfast, we’ll take one last drive through nature, admiring how the long blue shadows over the desert look like wind slabs over snow. From here, it’s back to Windhoek to catch our departing flights home.
