Overview – Solio Ranch
Solio Ranch, also known as Solio Game Reserve, is located on the Laikipia Plateau and was established in 1970 to help breed white and black rhinos. It’s now a crucial sanctuary for both species. The breeding program has been so successful that many rhinos have been moved to other parks and reserves. This small park is filled with rhinos and also has other safari animals.

Wildlife
Solio Ranch is home to a large population of both black and white rhinos. The reserve also protects zebras, buffalo, giraffes, and various antelope species. While all the typical predators, including big cats, live in the area, they are not often seen. Lions are the most frequently spotted, followed by cheetahs, while leopards are rarely seen.

Guided game drives are the primary activity at Solio Ranch, though self-guided drives may also be an option. During these drives, you’ll search for wildlife along the main circuit. Horseback riding is another popular activity, but it’s exclusively for lodge guests. Nature walks are also available, but only within the lodge grounds.
Scenery
Solio Ranch is located in the valley between the striking, snow-capped peak of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountains, offering beautiful views of both. The landscape is mostly grassy plains, with the acacia-lined Moyo River winding through the entire reserve.
Weather & Climate
Solio’s close location to the equator means temperatures stay fairly constant year-round, but it gets much cooler after dark. Keep this in mind when dressing for early morning game drives. The Dry season (June to September) is usually sunny. The Wet season (October to May) begins with short rains (October and November) and ends with long rains (March to May), with a drier spell from December to February in between.
Best Time To Visit
Solio Ranch provides excellent wildlife viewing all year round. The best time to visit is during the Dry season (June to September) when there’s no rain to interrupt your activities. December to February is also quite dry and a good time to visit. It’s best to avoid November and April, the peaks of the short and long rains. For bird watching, the best time is from December to February.

Wildlife & Animals – Solio Ranch

The ranch boasts excellent concentrations of black and white rhinos, with black rhinos often camouflaged in the trees and more challenging to spot compared to white rhinos. Lion sightings are also a possibility. Additional wildlife found here includes zebra, giraffe, warthog, and buffalo. Antelope species such as eland, Coke’s hartebeest, Beisa oryx, waterbuck, and impala are also present.

Wildlife Highlights

Rhinos are the highlight of this compact reserve. White rhinos roam the grassy plains in small family groups of three to four individuals, though occasionally larger herds of up to 15 can be spotted. Black rhinos, known for their shy nature, prefer denser vegetation. Interestingly, both species sometimes mingle in mixed groups. The reserve is also home to resident predators like lions, cheetahs, and leopards, or they pass through regularly.

Best Time for Wildlife Viewing

Wildlife viewing at Solio is consistently rewarding due to the reserve’s compact size. However, rain can disrupt game drives and overall enjoyment of the environment. Therefore, the optimal times to visit are during the Dry season (June to September) and another dry period from December to February, which also offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.
