Day 2: Afternoon Safari in Masai Mara

Today, embark on a scenic six-hour journey through Kenya's Rift Valley to the Masai Mara National Reserve. Prepare yourself for awe as you enter the breathtaking savannah plains of the Masai Mara!

Following a late lunch, you will have your first encounter with these plains, teeming with wildlife. The Masai Mara adjoins Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, and together, they host one of Africa's most famous spectacles: the annual great migration. More than 2.5 million animals traverse the plains of the Serengeti and Masai Mara collectively, following seasonal rains in pursuit of lush grazing land.

The reserve is named "Masai Mara" in tribute to the Masai people, who have inhabited this region since migrating from the Nile Basin centuries ago. The word "Mara" means "spotted" in the Maa language, a reference to the landscape dotted with numerous short, bushy trees across the expansive savannah.

The Masai Mara is celebrated for its rich wildlife, and today you have the entire day to explore and possibly spot them all! The reserve hosts over 95 species of animals and more than 400 bird species. From mid-September to mid-October, the great migration makes its grand entrance here, bringing vast herds of wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, antelopes, and impalas, all attempting to cross the Mara River.

During other months, the Masai Mara still offers sightings of the famous Big Five, along with cheetahs, servals, hyenas, bat-eared foxes, either black-backed or side-striped jackals, hippos, crocodiles, baboons, warthogs, topis, elands, waterbucks, oribis, reedbucks, and many more incredible species!

Day 4
Lake Naivasha
Day 4: Lake Naivasha

The enchanting Lake Naivasha, nestled in the Kenyan Rift Valley at an altitude of 1,884 meters, is the highest lake in the Great Rift Valley. Today, you'll travel from the Masai Mara National Reserve to this expansive 139-square-kilometer freshwater lake in about four to five hours.

From 1937 to 1950, Lake Naivasha served as a landing site for Imperial Airways planes on their long-haul route from Durban to Dublin. Today, the lake is a favored day trip destination for residents of Nairobi due to its closeness to the capital.

Surrounded by swamps, forests, and rock formations, Lake Naivasha offers an ideal setting for a remarkable boat safari among groups of hippos and flamingos. Along its shores, you may spot zebras, wildebeests, and giraffes. Following this, you can walk among these animals during a guided walking safari on Crescent Island, known as the 'hidden gem of Naivasha', located in the middle of the lake. This atmospheric location was a primary filming site for the 1985 romantic drama ‘Out of Africa’, adding a touch of cinematic history to its natural beauty.

Amboseli National Park
Day 5: Afternoon Safari in Amboseli

Amboseli National Park, positioned on the border between Kenya and Tanzania, is a seven to eight-hour drive from Lake Naivasha. You'll arrive just in time for a sunset game drive, a perfect introduction to the park!

Covering nearly 400 square kilometers, Amboseli boasts stunning views of the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro. The park is renowned for its large herds of free-roaming elephants, offering a unique opportunity to capture iconic photographs of these majestic creatures with Africa’s highest standalone mountain as the backdrop.

Until 2020, the park was also the sanctuary for an extraordinary bull elephant named Tim. This magnificent animal became a major attraction in Amboseli due to his impressive size and remarkable tusks that nearly touched the ground. Tim was about 50 years old when he passed away in February 2020.

Day 6
Amboseli National Park
Day 6: Full Day Safari in Amboseli

We recommend starting your day early by taking a sunrise game drive, when the animals are most active.

Dedicate the entire day to game drives, giving you ample time to thoroughly explore Amboseli National Park. Spanning 392 square kilometers, the park features a diverse landscape of acacia woodland, rocky thorny bush, swamps, marshland, and a Pleistocene lake. Common safari residents such as giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, elephants, and big cats including lions, cheetahs, and leopards are frequently seen here.

The Masai, who live nearby, are the ones who named the park. "Kioko Lake," at the park's center, often dries up completely during the dry season, leaving behind ashy soil known as "amboseli" to the Maasai people, which is the origin of the park's name. During your visit to Amboseli, you also have the opportunity to immerse yourself in Maasai culture by visiting one of their villages.

Day 7
Nairoi City
Day 7: Nairobi Airport

Enjoy the breathtaking beauty of Amboseli one last time, as today concludes your safari adventure! If you're not ready to end your journey, consider adding more national parks to your itinerary. Alternatively, you could drive back to Nairobi to catch your return flight.

Alternatively, we suggest taking a thrilling train ride to Mombasa, where you can either fly home or extend your vacation with some beach time.

Kenya is home to some spectacular tropical beaches, ideal for relaxing after a safari. At Bush 2 City Adventure, we particularly love the gorgeous southern coast. Diani Beach, located 20 kilometers south of Mombasa, features stunning crystal blue waters and white sandy shores, while the vibrant Bamburi Beach to the north offers lively beachfront activities. Additionally, the historical city of Mombasa is nearby, providing cultural excursions to enhance your beach experience.
